和室（畳） Tatami

い草で作られた床材

昔は、フローリングのように板を薄く作るのが困難だったため

手軽に、軽く、保湿性、断熱性もある畳という形が形成されたようだ。

It was difficult to make thin boards like flooring, so tatami, which was easy to make, lightweight, moisturizing, and

insulating, was developed.

塗り壁（ぬりかべ）Nurikabe

今は、壁紙が主流になっているが、昔は、今のようにボードのような

建材が無かったため、小舞（竹を格子状に組んだもの）を下地として

土地塗りをして、漆喰、珪藻土などを塗ったもの

Wallpaper is now mainstream, but in the past, building materials like boards were not available.

so komai (bamboo plasterwork) was used as a base coat, and then plaster and diatomaceous earth were applied.

襖（ふすま）fusuma 障子（しょうじ）Syouji

部屋を仕切る為に使われる建具

竹を骨組みにして、紙を張ったもの

昔は、今ほどプライベートを重視していなかった為

このような造りになったようです。

昔は、トイレに行くのに寝ている人の部屋を通って行っていたそうです。

中庭（なかにわ）Nakaniwa

光や風を家の中に取り入れやすくする為に、作られた庭

敷地面積が多く必要なので贅沢な庭です。

This garden was created to allow light and air to easily enter the house.

It is a luxurious garden as it requires a large amount of land.

縁側（えんがわ）Engawa

和室と屋外の庭との間の空間（通路）のことで、自然に対して開かれた造りをしており

家の内側と外側の境界線という特別な考えがあったようだ。

It is a space between the Japanese-style room and the outdoor garden, and was designed to be open to nature, suggesting a special concept of the boundary between the inside and outside of the house.

欄間（らんま）　Ranma

採光、通風、装飾といった目的のために天井と鴨居との間に設けられる開口部材をいう。

This refers to an opening material installed between the ceiling and the lintel for purposes such as lighting, ventilation, and decoration.

床の間（床の間） Tokonoma

床の間は、書院造の時代に形成られたもの

その家の象徴的な場所として物を飾り、季節などに応じて飾る美術品を替えて日常的に楽しむ場所、家の格式が表れた。　

It was a symbolic place in the home where objects were displayed and artworks were changed according to the season, making it a place for everyday enjoyment and reflecting the status of the home.

手水（ちょうず）　Tyouzu

今は、使っていないが手を洗う水を貯めるもの

昔は厠の近くにおいてあり、手を洗ったようだ

It’s a container for storing water for washing hands.

In the past, it was placed near the toilet and people used it to wash their hands.
